Stories of Proclaiming Christ

A few weeks ago my daughter Annison and I were having a coffee/hot chocolate date on the porch outside Roasters. We were enjoying reading books to each other when a tall, middle-eastern looking man walked over to us and said, “Excuse me, ma’am, are you a teacher?” I replied, “No, I’m just reading with my daughter.” He proceeded to tell me that his family had moved to town at the end of the previous school year and that his son was very behind in reading, and they were looking for someone to help him over the summer so he would be caught up when he starts first grade this year. I took his name and number and told him I would call a few people I knew and see if there was anyone who could help. He thanked me, went in to get coffee, and came back and sat down on the opposite end of the patio. After I made some phone calls I went over to him and said I was waiting to hear back from a few ladies and would call him as soon as I knew something. Again he said, “Thank you so much”. When I went to sit back down I knew the Holy Spirit was clearly telling me to use this opportunity to share the gospel with him. I quickly explained to Annsion what I needed to do, and as he got up to leave, I went over and asked him more about his family and his background. Then I asked if he had any religious beliefs. He seemed confused so I asked him if he was Muslim. He said, “Yes I am, but not the bad kind who want to hurt people, they are not even true Muslims.” I assured him I wasn’t thinking that. Then I paused to gather my thoughts, inwardly asking the Spirit to give me the words, and said, “Khalifa, I am a Christian, and I think that there is a bigger reason why we met today, more than your son needing help with his reading. Would you mind if I share with you what I believe?” He smiled and said, “Yes, sure, but we basically believe the same thing, in the same God.” Over the next 15 or so minutes I was able to share the gospel and explain some of the major differences between Christians and Muslims. He was very respectful as we talked back and forth and told me that he respects genuine Christians and their morality but that he could never change. I asked him to consider the things we talked about and told him I would pray for him. Annison promptly pulled a TBC Contact Card out of my purse and handed it to me to give to him. That afternoon after many phone calls, Terri Burke agreed to tutor his son at no charge, three times a week until school starts. She and I both were eager about the opportunity for her to pick up the baton and continue to share the love of Jesus with the little boy and the parents. She has had a couple of conversations with the mother, who also gave Terri her business card to stay in touch. Just the other day I was pulling in to the library where Terri tutors the little boy and saw Terri driving away. When I went in I saw a little middle-eastern boy and his mother. I wondered if this was Khalifa’s wife and son. I finally asked her and introduced myself. She was happy to make the connection and expressed gratitude for me helping to get them connected to Terri whom she was very appreciative of. I was able to tell her that the Lord orchestrated all of that. God is certainly at work!

Have you ever been called to something that is so outside your

comfort zone, that you know without a doubt that it is God calling you to

His purpose? Four years ago God pricked my heart with a unique call for a

very specific people group right here in Amarillo. God called me to share

His love with the women who work in Gentlemen’s Clubs in our town.

Convinced that God knew what He was doing, I answered. I clearly

remember saying “all right God, I hear you, I don’t know what this means

or what you need but, I’m in.”

With such a specific call, God surely just needed me to jump on

board with an existing group. I started calling agencies in Amarillo to see

what ministries were already serving the women that God laid on my heart.

The answer I kept getting was “oh yes, someone should do something”.

There were no current ministry opportunities to join. So I began

researching groups around the country that minister to similar groups in

other areas. I found a few and with that God started making His plan clear.

At the same time, God was working in other women’s hearts in our

church and placing the same desire for the same ladies. Over the next

year, God showed Himself in crystal clear fashion. He brought together 5

women who began praying and visiting about what we could do. He also

opened some community connections that were instrumental to the

development of His plan. This is an amazing story of details that only God

could bring together.

With the blessing of our TBC ministerial staff, a group named

BeLoved was formed. We currently have 7 active participants and 2 prayer

warriors. Our mission is to demonstrate God’s love to the women in

Amarillo who work in Gentlemen’s Clubs. The Scripture God placed on our

hearts as our guide is 1 John 4:7 "Beloved, let us love one another, for love

is from God." We demonstrate this love through tangible small monthly

gifts. The gifts are homemade cookies, pampering items, flowers, etc.

Each gift has a handwritten note of encouragement and scripture. This

August marks the two-year point of intentional monthly visits. We take 40

gifts each month as we plant seeds of the gospel. We have gospel

conversations during our visit and share non-judgmental encouragement

with the ladies as well as the employees in the clubs.

God has opened the door to a dark place where the definition of love

is so very tainted. He graciously equips us each month as we rely on Him

for strength and protection to enter this dark world to spread His light and

the truth of His unconditional love.

We covet your prayers for the BeLoved ministry.

Serving in Thailand has changed the way I live on missions in everyday life. The biggest way was God opening my eyes to the creation story while we were there and making it so real and alive. Chiang Mai is a beautiful place, and my favorite sight that I cannot shake from my mind was from our last day, serving in the garden at the school. Some of the men from the village had cut down bamboo, stripped it, and made it into stakes, planter boxes, borders and rows for the garden bed.  It was so obvious that a plant had to have been designed and created to be so useful for humans. And that was just one plant! Think of all the other kinds of plants, animals, and even the way our own bodies function every day. The detail behind it all is mind blowing.

In America it is sometimes difficult to plainly see the creation story, in my opinion.  We have so many “man-made” things, and we give all the glory to man for making all we have. I have been motivated by what God has shown me in Thailand to start incorporating the creation story, and how real God the Creator is, into my every day life. It is something people can sit and think on – about how abundant and useful the things from the earth are to us. It all had to have been planned and created. Just like the song “So Will I” by Hillsong United says, “If creation still obeys you so will I.” The sun still rises and sets just like it was told to do so. It has been something I love to share now here in the states and challenge others and myself to think about more often. It leads into gospel conversations more naturally and makes the truth of it so much more obvious.

From the moment she sat down, it was clear that this was not going to be the kind of flight where I get a lot of reading done. She needed help – getting her bag in the overhead compartment, collecting her pills that she dropped, finding the other end of her seat belt. She was loud – so much so that the other passengers turned around to see who had just moved into the neighborhood. She was needy – story after story of family tragedies, sudden deaths, and her own current batter with cancer.

While I listened, it was clear that the Lord had orchestrated this opportunity for me to share the gospel. Forty-five minutes into the conversation, she finally took a breath. Since she was talking about death, I was able to ask her what her views of the afterlife were. Her response included a few things about God and a few things about love. From here, I was able to share with her about the God of love and how all the brokenness that we experience in life is due to the fact that we live in a fallen and sinful world – but that this was not God’s original design. I spoke of redemption and ultimate healing in Jesus, and how we can have the promise of forgiveness and eternal life through faith in what He accomplished in His perfect life, death, and resurrection. While she did not profess faith in Jesus by the time we landed, I’m confident that she felt cared for (listened to) and that she heard the Truth.

As Christians, it is so important for us to be good listeners as we interact with others. When we listen well and ask good questions, we will find it much easier to transition our conversations to the gospel.

Be encouraged by this great testimony from a member of our Taiwan mission team…

What did God teach you on your trip to Taiwan?

God is so gracious and taught me innumerable things on this trip! Two of the biggest things God taught me was about His sovereignty and how He is our Sustainer. So many times I/we would be exhausted or feel inadequate (only because we are) in situations throughout the week, and He was our Sustainer each and every time and in every situation. His power is made perfect in weakness and I saw that demonstrated over and over. Additionally, I had never had the opportunity before to share Bible stories and ultimately the Gospel with someone who had never heard it! That experience in and of itself was amazing, but it also was a reminder of how sovereign He is, and that He is able to use someone who “isn’t good with words” or does not have a degree in communication or seminary to proclaim His truth. He simply wants our obedience and He will equip us at that moment because He is God! One other thing I really want to share was something that I learned while visiting a temple dedicated to one of the Taiwanese idols. On our final day in Taichung, we toured a temple with the Blackhursts and a few of our new Taiwanese friends. Before even entering the temple, you could smell the incense they were burning to their god. There were tables where you could buy fake money to burn as a sacrifice to the god. Once inside, the temple had numerous people performing various religious rituals and trying to sacrifice enough, do enough, and be enough for their god.  They would have to reintroduce themselves to their god when they would go to a different temple dedicated to the same god. While watching these beautiful people whom I had grown to love worship this false god, my heart was heavier than it has ever been. I had never before seen or felt such hopelessness and wanted to tell everyone there about the One True God, who knows your name, who created you, and who wants a relationship with you… not just a bunch of burning of fake money. I had been around beautiful individuals the entire week who had spent their entire life believing in false gods such as the one represented in that temple, and this week may well have been their first opportunity to hear about our amazing God! This leads me into the second question…

How has your life been different since coming back?

After being around the amazing people of Taiwan, interacting with them, building relationships with them, and loving them, I realized that there are people in desperate need of the Gospel all around me every day; whether I am in Taiwan or in Amarillo. I have been convicted of the need to live with an urgency to proclaim Christ and the amazing news of the Gospel, rather than the complacency in which I often live. I also have learned the importance of living in daily obedience to God. I wish I could say that I am always walking around with this in the forefront of my mind, but I often become self-absorbed and busy. I will say that my trip to Taiwan has been the beginning of what I pray will be a lifelong commitment of living my life all for the glory of Christ, whether I am on a trip to Taiwan, working in Amarillo, or wherever I am.
